'A Vita Rosato (Rosé), Calabria, Italy 2021
Husband and wife team Francesco and Laura de Franco are located in Cirò, a region dominated by one producer: Librandi, who produces over 200,000 cases per year. By contrast, Francesco & Laura make only 2000 cases total. They work with the grape variety Gaglioppo, a rustic variety native to the area which typically has dusty tannins and aromas of roses; it is an offspring of Sangiovese and a cousin to Nerello Mascalese. This is most certainly a food rosé driven by red fruit, a dusty mineral undertone and rose hips, along with a little but of tannins. This wine will make you think a little differently about rosé and is a really delight with summer pastas, tomato based fish dishes, aged pecorino and artichokes.
Grape: Gaglioppo
Viticulture: Organic, with biodynamic practices
