Batavia Arrack van Oosten, Java, Indonesia
Batavia Arrack is a classic and historically important spirit, brought back to the New World by Dutch traders in the 1800's, it began the cocktail craze in the Americas as the key ingredient for a traditional Rum Punch. Distilled on the island of Java from local sugarcane and Javan red rice, it is a truly unique spirit that sets the bar for other pure and dry agricole rums worldwide. It is bottled unaged and free of any sugar or additives, at 50% alcohol by volume. With plenty of vegetal funky notes and a very dry and smooth mouthfeel, it is an irreplaceable bottle for any classic cocktail bar.
Rum Punch is actually not related in any way to the English word "punch", but is derived from an Indonesian word for the number 5. Punch is defined as having five ingredients: Spirit, Spice, Sugar, Citrus, Water (or ice). The right balance of these 5 ingredients, whether shaken or stirred, is one of the most perfect cocktails and truly the springboard for most modern cocktails, including the Daquiri, Margarita, Cosmopolitan, New York Sour, and all derivations of these.
