Champagne Corbon 'Les Bacchantes,' Avize, Grand Cru, Champagne, France 2013

Champagne Corbon 'Les Bacchantes,' Avize, Grand Cru, Champagne, France 2013
The Corbon family farms around 6 hectares of vines, most of which lie in the Vallée de la Marne, but two hectares are in Avize. Agnès, Claude Corbon's daughter, is now running the property after many years working by her father's side. There is a cute story behind the name of this wine: Agnès made the first Corbon Champagne ever to be barrel aged as her father implemented aging in cement & stainless; when it came time to bottle the new cuvée, Claude had grown a mustache in support of the Mowvember charity drive. Partly to honor him (and certainly to tease him a bit) she named the new wine 'Les Bacchantes'. This is a serious bottle of Champagne with plenty of life ahead. Bacchantes always leads with loads of brioche and baked bread, baked apple and cirtus. The midpalate swirls in the mouth giving a deep sense of complexity and loads of flavor, leading to a lengthy finish loaded with flavor and great acidity. It is hard to think of a better bottle of vintage Champagne for $90.
