Ciro Picariello Fiano di Avellino, Campania, Italy 2022
This Fiano will make you go 'ah haaa'. Ciro Picaricello Fiano is chiseled and textured. Their 12 hectares of organically farmed vineyards are located at relatively high elevation in the province of Campania, divided between the villages of Montefredane (1,600 feet above sea level) and Summonte (2,100 feet). The combination of volcanic soils and elevation lend the wine a uniquely complex but crisp minerality that separates this from other expressions of the Fiano varietal.
Hand picked grapes undergo a 60-day fermentation with their native yeast, then the wine rests for 6 to 10 months on the lees in stainless steel, with no oak used at any point. There is refreshing acidity, and the full array of flavors Fiano is known for (such as pear, hazelnut, and orange blossom) is present, but far more subtle. These wines are a true delight and a great find!
