Dominio del Águila Albillo Viñas Viejas, Spain 2017
At a young age Jorge interned at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti before making his way to Vega Sicilia for a few years. At DRC, he developed a love for terroir and at Vega Sicilia, he developed a passion for indigenous Spanish white grape varieties. Various versions of Albillo are planted in the vineyards of Dominio del Águila. Jorge is the proud owner of two rare, small parcels that are planted entirely with Albillo. Despite the fact that the D.O. doesn’t recognize white wines made from this grape, Jorge feels that his best vines of Albillo Mayor – small clusters of deeply golden berries – demanded to be segregated and made into a tiny production white wine.
The grapes are hand harvested, whole cluster pressed by foot into neutral French oak barrels, a long, slow natural yeast fermentation taking up to 10 months with 35 months on the fine lees in French oak barrels, with no bâtonnage or racking. The resulting wine is glycerol and complex but mimicking a Burgundian profile. It is powerful and ripe. Flinty with a hint of spices. Produced in a vintage that proved difficult for many winemakers in Ribera del Duero (2017), Albillo Viñas Viejas 2017 is exquisite. 3,847 bottles and 10 magnums were filled in September 2020.
