Domaine de Bellivière 'Les Rosiers,' Jasnières, Loire Valley, France 2020
Bellivière is an estate founded based on a passion for agriculture and winemaking. In the 1970s, the winemaker Joël Gigou pioneered a renewal of Jasnières and Coteaux-du-Loir as viticultural areas. Eric Nicolas, a city kid without any roots in either the region or agriculture, developed a passion for vines and wines. After studying enology, he looked in the Loire to acquire vineyards, mainly because he had met several passionate winemakers there.
Sourced from Domaine de Bellivière's vines that are up to 50 years old, this is fermented in mostly used oak barrels with just one quarter aged in new oak. Think Vouvray, but not. This is Jasnières. Quince, tropical fruits, and a whisper of Madagascar vanilla coax the wine across the palate. The strikingly fresh acidity balances the touch of residual sugar (17 g/L)—a powerful wine showing intensity and depth.
