Domaine Fumey-Chatelain Ploussard 'Grappes Entières de Fertans', Jura, France, 2018
If there is a cool kid winemaker in Jura right now, Marin is just that. Since taking the reins from his parents in 2015, Marin is making some of the most interesting artisanal wines the Jura has to offer. Vines date as far back as 70 years and many were propagated with sélection massale. Since 2017 the entire domaine has converted to organics. Sourced from seventy year old vines which grow in singular gray marl (“marnes grises”). The name “grappes entieres de fertans” refers to the Ploussard grapes fermented using the whole cluster process: the grapes and stems crushed together, a traditional method the Jura. These wines open up a touch closed, but with some air they come to life. They are subtle, offering notes of blood orange rind & underripe strawberry that keep evolving. The wine is light but the tannins are granular with a lovely grip.
