Franzen Bremer Calmont Riesling trocken, Mosel, Germany, 2020
If there is a place that is 100% steep slopes and Mosel slates, it is the Calmont. And we are talking about the steepest vineyard in the Mosel - To stand at the Mosel’s edge and look up at the Calmont, the cliff appears “almost threatening,” Kilian, the winemaker, acknowledges. “Many passages, even steeper than 65 degrees, rise almost vertically". They build Terraces with walls for protection, but the power of the Calmont itself is so great that these walls are in constant state of repair. Think of all that power translated into a bottle of off-dry Riesling and here we are.
