Bernard Levet 'Les Journaries' Côte-Rôtie, France 2018
Bernard and Nicole Levet produced their first commercial vintage in 1983 after years of selling wine in barrel to private clients and local cafes. Today, their daughter Agnès is at the helm, though Bernard is still intimately involved. Father and daughter work their extreme, unforgiving terrain with bred-in-bone skill. The Levet’s own a third of a hectare of 40-year-old vines in the infamous vineyard La Landonne, that Les Journaries is built around, augmented by small parcels of old vines in other crus. No de-stemming is done here, which allows for that intoxicating spice signature to reach even greater heights. Les Journaries shows refinement and elegance, though in no sense is it tame. The 2018 is intensely spicy on the nose, boasting with violets & olive tapenade, and the palate is relatively suave for young Levet, with pert acidity keeping things vibrant.
