Blaufränkisch with the soul of Syrah.

At the far eastern edge of Austria, where vast, shallow Lake Neusiedl and the low Leitha mountain range wrangle for influence, you will find the vineyards of Markus Altenburger. Working from 30 small plots (all now in the third year of the organic conversion) scattered around the historic wine village of Jois, Altenburger is focused on Blaufränkisch and a narrow range of now-rare native white varieties and old-vine chardonnay. For the price, this wine is quite nuanced, offering aromas of violets & purple fruits and, on the palate, notes of blackberry, blueberry, plum, and spice rack, all while maintaining a focused and nervy energy. Although this medium-bodied wine holds persistent tannin, a slight chill is welcome.
