You can't get much more Chianti than Montevertini.  In 1981 Sergio Manetti became fed up with the rules of the DOCG and removed his winery from the governing body, as he refused to add Trebbiano to his Sangiovese.  His wines focus on the beauty and structure of Sangiovese.  The Pian del Ciampolo is his wine that is more approachable in its youth, lighter on its feet.  Cherry red fruit, earthy tannin and bright acidity.  The wine spends 18 months in neutral barrel before bottling.
