Nadir Cunéaz 'Pic Ten,' Vino Rosso, Italy 2021
File this under “stuff that shouldn’t exist” — the time and effort spent making this wine simply does not make sense. Heroic rescue mission to save a forgotten vineyard? Perhaps, but I dare not overstate the narrative. The wine inside the bottle is the best reason to dive in. One single 500L barrel was produced. The wine is aromatically fresh, herbal, earthy, and full of the high spice of full stem inclusion — a rarity for Nebbiolo. The palate is brightly fruity, with high acid and a terrific pink grapefruit/raspberry blast, a bit like Pineau d’Aunis. There are Nebbiolo tannins here, thank god, offering a tight spine of grip that is quite finely tuned, supporting the sappiness of the fruit with balance and grace. This is not a vin de soif or glou-glou (however you say that in Italian) but if ever there was a spring/summer expression of Nebbiolo, this is it.
Grape: Picotendro aka Nebbiolo
Viticulture: Lutte Raisonnée, Synthetic treatments are exceedingly rare, with no herbicides and copper-sulfate as the primary means of intervention
Soil: Sandy, glacial moraine
