Pasini San Giovanni 'Il Valtènesi', Riviera del Garda Classico DOC, Lombardy, Italy 2020
The winery itself is in Valtènesi on the southeastern slopes of Lake Garda in Lombardy. Lake Garda, formed by glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age, is Italy’s largest lake. Owing to its depth (over 1100 feet at its deepest) which acts as a natural heat reservoir, and the Alps to the north, which protect from cold northern European winds, Garda has a uniquely warm climate for such a northern latitude. Olive trees, citrus, capers, and cacti are some of the more typically Mediterranean plants that thrive on the shores of the lake. Originally descending from Sangiovese, Groppello Gentile has thin skins and light color, and produces fresh, bright wines with characteristics of flowers, spice, and sweet tree fruits (think Italian poulsard and you’re pretty close).
Pairing: Thai cuisine and spicy Chinese dishes. This red is not afraid of rich dishes, aged cheeses, black truffle risotto, Passatelli with Parmigiano fondue and truffle, bucatini all'amatriciana, roast beef, gnocchi.
Grape: Groppello
Viticulture: Organic
