Piero Busso 'Majano' Barbera d'Alba, Piedmont, Italy 2021

Piero Busso takes wine seriously.  Not that others in the region don't, I mean, Cuneo is where some of the most age-worthy and in-demand reds in the world are made.  But Piero has an approach to winemaking that is no-frills and classic, and he's been at it since the 70's, and his father before him since the winery was founded in 1948.

Piero ages his for about a year in old barrels of various sizes, which adds a well-integrated structure to the wine.  There is that lip-smacking black fruit that Barbera is known for, but it's grounded by ferrous notes of blood and rare steak.  A very structured wine with still achieves balance and can hold up to the heaviest meat dishes.
