Roagna Barolo 'Pira', Piedmont, Italy 2016
Sourced from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto commune of Barolo, this monopole vineyard is sole owned by the Roagna family. The long history of the estate has long roots in the commune of Barbaresco, beginning very early in the twentieth century by Vincenzo Roagna. Today the property is run by Luca Roagna, the fifth generation of the family. In 1989, the family's plan to one day own vines in Barolo came into fruition when purchasing the Pira cru. The wine is aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is aged for five years in wood before release.
