Roagna Langhe Rosso, Italy 2018

Roagna’s Langhe Rosso is essentially Barolo/Barbaresco without the price tag.  The wine is sourced from the younger vines within some of Barolo and Barbaresco’s top vineyard sites, Pira and Pajé (Pie-yay).  Following the harvest, the fruit spends time in small containers while it is hand sorted in search for the perfect berries. Fermentation follows - exclusively in large wood casks which last for roughly ten days.  The ancient technique of maceration, by splinting the submerged cap process take place, which lasts for at least two months (60 days). Finally, the wine is then aged in a neutral oak barrel for approximately five years, making this aged for longer than required for Barolo and Barbaresco. Luca Roagna's Barolo's cost upwards of $250, so this is basically a steel.
