Wohlmuth 'Kitzeck-Sausal' Sauvignon Blanc, Südsteiermark, Austria 2022

Weingut Wohlmuth has been family-run since 1803, putting tremendous work and passion into their extremely steep, sparse slate soils to create unmistakable wines from one of Austria´s most historic wine-growing areas. The vineyards are at altitudes of 400 to 540 meters above sea level, with an average grade of up to 60%, and are among Europe´s steepest vineyard sites.

Kitzeck-Sausal is an Ortswein (Village Wine) which highlights the difference in each unique village in Südsteiermark, in this case, the classic minerality of the slate soils of the area. Ortswein typicaly has a longer maturation to enhance the expression of its terroir. Grapes are picked late and selectively by hand, given 8-16 hours of maceration, and pressed gently and slowly. The juice is left to spontaneously ferment in old wood and aged for 7 months on lees.

For this Sauv Blanc, think Sancerre but on slate soils instead of limestone. Aromas of green apple and citrus, a bouquet of grass and herbs with a touch of smoke, tangerine and lemon flavors on the palate and a touch of fresh green pepper notes. Nuanced and elegant, high acidity, and bone dry of course.
