Bonnet-Cotton Beaujolais, France, 2023

Pierre Cotton and Marine Bonnet are a modern Beaujolais power couple. Cotton went from a motorcycle mechanic to taking over his family estate in 2015, consisting mainly of vineyards in Brouilly, and began to make a name for himself immediately with his defined and exuberant style. His wife, Marine, joined him in 2020, adding her knowledge of viticulture and agronomy, to realize the full potential of their partnership in life and love: Bonnet-Cotton.

The duo have slowly revitalized the ecosystems in all of their certified organic vineyards by planting over 500 trees of carefully selected native species important to local wildlife. They're working to mitigate the effects of climate change on the sustainability of the Beaujolais region, which has seen drought and compromised harvests in many recent vintages due to rising temperatures and unpredictable weather events. By increasing biomass and diversity they have helped retain water and moisture in their vineyards, and stabilize both the soil and the average temperatures.

In the cellar they seek to let their pure organic fruit shine and remain unadulterated by any chemical interventions. Partial carbonic maceration of 100% Gamay is typical of all their wines, with aging in large, century-old, neutral oak foudres originally built for aging beer. Sulfur is avoided during the winemaking process, unless a foudre is seen as problematic, and even then only at the end of élevage just before bottling. The final wines have a miniscule 10g/l SO2, or sometimes far less.

Their Beaujolais is made with full carbonic maceration of whole-cluster certified organic Gamay in cement, followed by 6 months in foudre, and just the tiniest touch of sulfur before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. It's a juicy, in-your-face, low-intervention Bojo, screaming to be drank while it's young, fun, and in the sun (preferably with a chill on it). An absolute gem for natural wine lovers, with plenty to enjoy for Beaujolais traditionalists. Notes of brambly black fruit pie, Earl Grey tea, grape soda, Chinese five spice, blacktop, and new leather jacket. Complex, vivacious, and a little naughty! This wine is limited and in-demand, since this progressive powerhouse couple is going nowhere but up as they harness the powers of nature to tackle the challenges of climate change in Beaujolais. Because of their hard work, you can just sit back, grill, and chill.
