Valfaccenda 'bis-esto', Vino Rosso, Italy 2021
I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am to have Valfaccenda 'bis-esto' Grignolino in the shop. I have always been a big fan of Valfaccenda wines, and this new wine is fabulous.
Lucca & Carolina Roggero began their winery, Valfaccenda, in 2010. The winery was founded in Lucca’s hometown, Roero, in the region of Piedmont. Roero is synonymous with the white grape Arnies, but the Roggero’s also grow & produce a fair amount of Nebbiolo . However, this is not Nebbiolo; this is Grignolino!
In 2020, the Roggero's finally had enough time and resources to take on a new little side project. Luca’s curiosity in exploring terroir led him to Monferrato (along with his love for Grignolino), another Piedmontese region just northeast of Roero. Grignolino does not grow property in the sandy soils of Roero. Therefore, for Lucca to fulfill his curiosity, he needed to look elsewhere.
He sources this Grignolino in Monferrato from an organic grower & family friend within a vineyard of the 25-year-old vines. In the cellar, the fruit is macerated for 15 days, fermented in steel, and aged for six months in wood of various sizes (228, 300, 500L). The resulting wine is unfined & unfiltered. Only 2,000 bottles are produced -- this will always be a limited production wine, as it's a little passion project for the winery: a red-fruited and vibrant wine. There are notes of earth, pulverized minerals, and violets. The tannins have a lovely grip, but they are not overbearing.
Pairing: This wine is versatile but the perfect companion to Italian-focused dishes. Vitello Tonnato, fried chicken, spaghetti with clams, pumpkin tortelli with sage and butter, parmesan herb ravioli, truffle risotto, spaghetti carbonara, tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms
