Close your eyes and picture rolling hills, carpeted in meadows dotted with spring wildflowers, grazed by a few wandering cattle, with jagged snow-capped peaks jutting out in the distance. Then, take a sip.

These wines will transport you to the high-elevation mountainous regions of the world, such as Alto Adige, Valle d'Aoste, the Swiss Valais, or even the Andes Mountains of Chile. They have a distinct and unmistakable identity due to the slow ripening from cool weather and the harsh conditions on steep rocky slopes. These are alpine wines, and to get to know them you needn't climb a mountain, but merely open a bottle.
