Nikka distillery lives by the motto “one eye on the past and one eye to the future,” and this whisky truly encompasses that ethos. It is a blend of 40% single malt whiskies from two of Nikka's other distillery locations, Miyagikyo and Yoichi, and 60% grain spirit from their various Coffey stills. These spirits are separately aged as long as 10 years before blending and further aged for some 3 to 6 months in various casks such as ex-bourbon barrels, ex-sherry butts, and refilled, recharred and remade hogsheads. The final blend is then bottled undiluted at cask strength in these unique cuboid bottles. There is a ton of complexity from the various whiskeys in the blend, with some leather and a mild smoke leading the nose into golden pear, Mirabelle plum and golden yellow apple. on the palate. Quite a long finish here that fades from the initial heat into something woody and slightly candied.
