A very steep site, gently curved almost like a magnifying glass, yet well ventilated by westerly winds. Alongside pure loess, gravel and conglomerate reach the surface here, giving the vineyard its name. This soil composition occurs across only about 100 metres of the hill. Locally the site was known as Dürnsteiner; the oldest source, from 1276, calls it Tyernstainer, derived from ‘dry stone’. Austere, mineral wines grow here from Riesling selections of various origins, planted in 1996
