Domaine Fontchêne 'Les Antiques' Blanc IGP Alpilles, France 2023
Domaine Fontchêne 'Les Antiques' Blanc IGP Alpilles, France 2023
René Milan took over the family estate of Domaine Fontchêne in 2013, and has since converted the property to organic and biodynamic management. His wines are truly expressive of this terroir, which is geologically similar to southern Rhone but with the subtle maritime influence of Provence. All winemaking is low intervention, with spontaneous fermentation using native yeast, limited battonage and racking, and only the bare minimum sulfur added at bottling.
'Les Antiques' is a crisp but layered white using predominantly the lighter Grenache Blanc and Clairette grapes, and a lesser portion of Marsanne and Chardonnay. With notes of peach skin, apricot nectar, dried pineapple, and white flowers, this has the complexity of a Rhone white with snappy acidity and a touch of coastal minerality.
Grapes: 33% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 26% Marsanne, 11% Chardonnay
Viticulture: Organic and Biodynamic
Soils: Sandy blue clay and large galets roulés pebbles similar to those of south Rhone
Pairing: Game hen stuffed with bread and herbs, Farm fresh chevre, Lemon tart with fresh raspberries
