Vinarija Križ 'Plavac Mali White Label', Croatia 2020
Vinarija Križ has just under 2 hectares on their family estate planted to the important indigenous Croatian red grape, Plavac Mali. They manage these ~60 year old vines by hand, free of any chemicals, and follow many biodynamic principles. The wine is fermented with its native yeasts, then aged in Slovenian oak barrels for at least 1 year before bottling with no sulfur added.
This is a great intro to this classic Croatian grape with big tannins and tart black fruit. Croatian reds deserve more attention in the US, especially from lovers of Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, or other full-bodied reds. This example will also appeal to natural wine fans because Kriz's style is definitely on the natural end of the spectrum.
