Willett Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky is one of the region's oldest and most respected whiskey producers. The member of the Willett family that started it all was John David Willett, who was the master distiller for five separate Kentucky distilleries in the 1800's. It wasn't until 1936, after the repeal of Prohibition, that his grandson, Thompson Willett, founded the Willett Distillery as we know it today. One of the few remaining family owned Kentucky Bourbon distilleries in a world that's shifted toward large corporate ownership, Willett continues to proudly produce classic bourbon and rye in what is known as "The Bourbon capital of the world".
Willett's single barrel bottlings are highly sought after by whiskey enthusiasts, and this is the newest release on the market. Barrel #6226 was recently selected for bottling by the whiskey portfolio manager of Skurnik, who is Willett's national distributor.
This 11-Year Rare Release is a gem, cut at full cask strength and bottled non-chill filtered after aging 11 years in a single barrel (#6226) which yielded 127 bottles. Deep and rich with classic Willett black tea and vanilla spice set on a caramel bottom balanced by the tart tension of smooth oak tannin, while the complex nose throws aromas of orange marmalade and roasted peach. An overall structured and darker rye that truly shows the benefit of extended barrel aging.
