Domaine Hauvette ‘Dolia’ Alpilles Blanc 2016

It’s difficult to discuss wines with exceptional texture and character without mentioning Domaine Hauvette. Dominique Hauvette has established a vineyard in the rugged and untamed terrain of Les Alpilles, where she has devoted herself to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Her wines are one-of-a-kind, yet they reflect an often underappreciated wine region.

Les Alpilles is a range of jagged limestone hills that reaches a height of 387m. Vineyards are scattered on the foothills of Les Alpilles, surrounded by olive groves, Mediterranean scrub, and forests. Most of the wines produced in this region are red wines made from varying percentages of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and an assortment of Provencal grapes. Dominique produces red, white, and rosé wines, all of which are breathtaking gastronomic wines. However, her ‘Dolia’ Alpilles Blanc 2016 is an exquisite white wine that boasts a remarkable texture, weight, and Mediterranean energy.

The cèpage is 1/3 Roussanne , 1/3 Marsanne, and 1/3 Clairette (a field blend from the same parcel each year), whole cluster pressed, fermented and aged in cement eggs. This mineral-rich wine boasts an impeccable balance. Initially there is a mellow quality that permeates the palate, broadening with oxygen. A bouquet of white flowers is a delight to the senses, with hints of honey, herbs, and ripe Provençal fruit that further enhance its complexity. A prominent firm mineral core lends structure and power delightfully accompanied by notes of beeswax and wildflowers.
