Grange des Pères L'Hérault Rouge, France 2020
Grange des Pères L'Hérault Rouge, France 2020
Domaine Grange des Pères is a 12-hectare estate located in the Hérault region, at Aniane, one of the favorite crus of Languedoc among connoisseurs. Grown in this world-class marno-limestone soil are Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Counoise for reds, along with Roussanne, Marsanne, Chardonnay and Gros Manseng for white grapes.
Laurent Vaillé manages the estate and winemaking, a student first of kinesitherapy, who returned to school to study viticulture and oenology, then trained with Coche-Dury and Chave, in order to properly take over the vineyards his grandfather had acquired after World War II. Since then, his sumptuous and age-worthy wines have received unanimous recognition and dozens of rewards, and they still seem somehow to get more magnificent year after year.
Laurent follows sustainable agriculture principles in the vineyard, but the most significant factor in achieving wines of such density may be his conviction to cut yields to just a few grapes per vine. In the cellar the methods are natural with indigenous yeast fermentation, and the élevage is as slow as needed to achieve the fullest expression of the top-tier fruit. This is an absolutely massive and complex world-class red with incredibly aging potential; one for the collector.
