Vollenweider 'Goldgrube Aurum' Riesling, Germany 2020
Vollenweider 'Goldgrube Aurum' Riesling, Germany 2020
Daniel Vollenweider purchased a small, one-hectare plot of vines in the once-famous Wolfer Goldgrube. This is prime Middle Mosel real-estate, a site with historic fame. The Goldgrube also happens to have a genetic gold mine of old, un-grafted vines up to and beyond 80 years old. The Aurum is sourced from the greatest parcel in the Goldgrube, where the vines reach 100 years of age. The winemaking philosophy is as simple as it gets, there are no short cuts, no compromises. The estate is 100% Riesling and 100% steep vineyards awash with slate. The work is all done by hand and the vinification is as hands-off as possible. Bone dry, loads and loads of herbs and smoke and power.
Pairing: Crudo, Sushi, Thai cuisine
Grape: Riesling
Viticulture: No synthetic chemicals, minimal intervention
ABV: 12.5%
From Mosel Fine Wines:
The 2020er Goldgrube Aurum, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is a legally dry wine (with 3.4 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked on the oldest, over 100-year-old un-grafted vines in the vineyard and which was fermented for 18 months in cask before being bottled (hence the late AP number). It has a gorgeous and hugely spicy yet still restrained nose of minty herbs, lozenge, almond, licorice, lime, and lavender. The wine starts off on the creamy and comparatively light side yet built up its presence and structure as it develops. It becomes even intense and almost powerful. The finish has more lightness and finesse but is also immensely long and energetic. 2026-2040 (Reprint from Mosel Fine Wines Issue No. 62 – June 2022)
