Charvin 'Damon' Côtes-du-Rhône, France 2022
Laurent Charvin represents the sixth generation to run his family Chateauneuf-du-Pape estate since it was founded in 1851. He quickly became a leader in the movement to reintroduce traditional methods such as organic viticulture and whole-cluster fermentation in concrete tanks. As others followed his lead, he gained a devout following and was elevated to the top rank as one of only five 3-star-rated producers in the region. Charvin's 'Damon' is produced from an 80-year-old single vineyard planted by Laurent's great grandfather right next to the winery. The parcel was passed down a different family line, but Laurent was recently able to purchase it and return the plot to the modern Charvin estate. It comprises a co-planting of some 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah and a bit of the other red grapes of the region.
