Muses Estate Mouhtaro, Greece 2022
Muses Estate Mouhtaro, Greece 2022
This full-bodied and complex red is made from a very rare Greek varietal called Mouhtaro, which is grown only in the central Greek region of Askri, at the foot of Helicon mountain. Muses Estate was the first winery to revive this variety thanks to the efforts of Athanasios Zacharias. It is believed to be a grape associated with Artemis, as it was referenced in writings found in a shrine to the goddess. From 40-80 year-old vines, the finished wine is aged 12 months in 2-year and 3-year used oak barrels and 6 months in bottle. Full of dense black fruit that is not juicy but focused, with brambly tannins and a seductive nose of wild herbs and roasted game. This is an extremely age-worthy Greek red.
