Château de Manissy 'Terre Davau', Côtes du Rhône, France 2020
Château de Manissy was taken over in 2004 by young winemaker Florian André who modernized the estate and began converting to organic and biodynamic farming. Located in Tavel, the estate was previously owned by a religious order and is now known for producing wines in the Tavel, Lirac, Côtes du Rhône, and Châteauneuf du Pape appellations.
For the Terre Davau, André produces a blend incorporating a rare, old world Rhône varietal called Counoise. Blue clay soils with a surface covering of Urgonian limestone and pudding-stones. The south-east facing terroir enjoys the full benefit of the rising sun. Cold-macerated and naturally fermented before aging in concrete tanks. Softened by a bit of bottle age, the 2020 shows melted red fruit with a hint of baking spices and velvety smooth tannins; this balanced Côtes du Rhône is an amazing value.
