Luigi Giordano 'Cavanna' Barbaresco, Italy, Magnum Vertical 2017, 2018, 2019
Luigi Giordano transformed his father's winery to independent production before the Barbaresco appellation even existed, bottling the first wine under his own label in 1958. The winery remains family owned today, by Luigi himself, his daughter Laura, and his grandson Matteo. As early birds in the game, they claim access to some of Barbaresco’s most prestigious crus, including Asili and Montestefano, and are the sole producers of wine from Cavanna cru.
Giordano's 'Cavanna' bottlings are the only access to this cru on the American market, and this trio of magnums offers you snapshots of three consecutive vintages of this unique Barbaresco site. Plenty of tart cherry and dry herbs on the nose, with lost forest violets and a tight snap of crisp earth on the palate, all wrapped in sinewy tannins that are not letting go any time soon. These large-format beauties will continue to age for as long as it takes to assemble the ultimate crew of wine-loving friends to pop them all at once.
