Ferdinando Principiano Langhe Freisa, Italy 2022
Ferdinando Principiano Langhe Freisa, Italy 2022
The winery is located in Monforte zone of Barolo.
Ferdinando Principiano began his conversion to more natural winemaking practices in 2003, and nowadays his vineyards teem with wild flowers, fruit trees and biodiversity. A wild and thick leaf canopy provides shade to the grape clusters; early-picking tightens the acidity, and lowers the alcohol.
Produced from a single, half-hectare, southwest-facing plot in Montagliato. This deliciously honest, red-fruited Freisa delivers exactly the kind of strawberry aromas and snappy drinkability you crave after reading this.
Grape: 100% Freisa
Soil: Sandstone, rich in iron
Viticulture: Organic
Pairing: Duck ragu pappardelle
Principiano's Freisa pours a bricky garnet red, with aromas of red berries, and structured tannins that belie the fruit-forward nose. One smell whisks you away to the rolling hills of Piedmont, where you have just come through a northern Appenine mountain pass. You sit and take in the view, opening your old leather satchel brimming with fresh strawberries from the southern coast. The seductive aromas put you in a dreamy haze, as you sip a juicy red from your cowhide canteen. Before you know it, the sun is setting, and you rise to complete your trek to the west, where a cozy inn awaits you with supper and more delicious local Freisa.
