Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino, Italy 2019
Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino, Italy 2019
NOT your average “baby brunello”. This wine is full of of character. Wild yet honest to the Tuscan wine tradition. Winemaker Giuseppe Gorelli, who’s first Brunello harvest was back in 1987 under his grandfather’s label, seeks much more than to satisfy an audience with every bottle he makes, and with this vintage, he’s created something that reflects both his humility and his willingness to embrace complexity over simplicity. As a producer, Gorelli walks a fine line, respecting and honoring his heritage, without strictly following the path of generations before him. The end result achieves remarkable balance: this is a Rosso di Montalcino, which deserves to be looked at on its own record, not just as a prelude to Brunello.
The 2019 vintage was challenging, with non-stop rain at the beginning of the spring, the menace of downy mildew, and hail in mid-August, nevertheless , the high summer heat was followed by a cool, balancing finish to the growing season, letting the Sangiovese Grosso grapes develop a stunning balance of ripeness and acidity.
On the nose, you can find bright aromas of sour cherry, red currants, and just a hint of violet. It’s fragrant but grounded, carrying notes of earth and an almost smoky, rustic quality. On the palate, the wine is both vibrant and structured, revealing layers of red fruit, cedar, and a savory touch of tomato leaf. The tannins are fine yet assertive, providing an excellent backbone without overpowering the purity of the fruit. It’s a wine that invites you to slow down, to take that next bite of wild boar ragù or grilled lamb and then take another sip. This is a wine that develops depth and texture as it opens up.
