Magazzino Doganale 'Jefferson' Amaro Importante, Calabria, Italy
Vecchio Magazzino Doganale was started in 2016 by Ivano Trombino, but the name originates much further in his family history from his great grandfather’s agricultural company in the 1850s. Ivano had inherited the family farmlands, and among his grandfather's papers he kept seeing the name Jefferson, along with the recipe for this amaro.
Jefferson was the captain of a 19th century cargo ship, which crashed off the coast of Calabria carrying a hoard of illegal tobacco. This is how Jefferson met Ivano’s great great grandfather, Giocondo, a perfume producer by trade, and the two put their skills together to become partners distilling fine liquors. Ivano revived Giocondo's traditional recipe to produce a real and classic amaro, seeking to correct the gap he saw in liquor products between those using chemicals and those using only natural ingredients.
