Nusserhof Lagrein Riserva, Südtirol, Italy 2019
Nusserhof Lagrein Riserva, Südtirol, Italy 2019
Nusserhof is situated in the South Tyrol mountains of the Alto Adige in extreme northern Italy. It is owned by Heinrich and Elda Mayr, the family has worked the same land going back at least as far as 1788. The wine is aged in French oak botti for two years, followed by at least two years in bottle before release (far exceeding the DOC requirement of a minimum of 3 years aging for riserva wines). This a powerful yet graceful wine, full of energy from the warm alpine sun during the day and cold nights.
Darkly floral and delicate, with a beautiful bouquet of peppery herbs, wild berries and rose petals wafting up from the glass. This is pure elegance on the palate, silky-smooth and supple, with pure mineral-tinged red berries offset by sour citrus. It leaves the palate with a subtle coating of ripe tannins and a tinge of minerality while finishing with a bitter twang that calls the taster back to the glass. - Eric Guido
