Costers del Priorat 'Pissarres', Priorat, Spain 2019
Priorat can take the Garnacha/Carignan blend in a BIG direction, though modern examples like this are leaning toward a more balanced style that is less dependent on oak by using larger and older oak casks. With that said, this is absolutely a ripping red with serious power, and a great example of the modern evolution of winemaking in the well-established Priorat DOQ.
The two varietals are fermented separately in a mix of stainless steel and concrete vessels. Then the blend is aged in large-format, mostly neutral oak vessels of 225 and 500 liters to integrate and develop the deep fruit and mineral notes without incorporating too much oak. Ripe black fruit notes are well polished and accented by aromas of Mediterranean herbs, and the palate brings chilling minerality from the classic slate Llicorella soils.
Grapes: 60% Carignan, 40% Grenache
Soils: Llicorella, the ancient slate bedrock of Priorat
