Fuhrgassl-Huber Ried Mitterberg, Neustift am Walde, Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC, Austria 2020
Gemischter Satz (roughly translated as 'mixed set' or 'mixed planting') is no longer a local secret of Austrian vineyard towns. This fresh and quaffable style is often served as the house wine in the party barns of Vienna, much like we might put back local beers at an American brewery. Produced from vineyards co-planted with a slew of local varietals, which was initially a check against poor ripening of any one grape, more refined examples of this style are being made for the export market.
This is a delicious and approachable Gemischter Satz, juicy and crisp, with a thirst-quenching acidity and peachy white grape profile. While not sweet, it doesn't come off entirely dry, making it a wonderful alternative to Riesling for pairing with spicy foods and Thai or Indian dishes with complex flavors, but, of course, it goes great with roast pork or Viennese sausage too!
Grapes: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Weissburgunder, Welschriesling, Neuburger, Chardonnay
Pairing: Pad Thai, Pork chops, Wiener Schnitzel
