Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino, Italy 2020
Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino, Italy 2020
More than your average “baby brunello”, Giuseppe Gorelli's rosso is full of both character and tradition. Winemaker Giuseppe Gorelli who’s first Brunello harvest was back in 1987 under his grandfather’s label, seeks much more than to satisfy an audience with every bottle he makes, he follows his passion for complexity over simplicity. Gorelli walks a fine line, respecting and honoring his heritage, without strictly following the path of generations before him. The end result achieves remarkable balance; a Rosso di Montalcino which deserves to be considered own, not just as a prelude to Brunello.
The 2019 vintage began with challenges, however, the high summer heat was followed by a cool, balancing finish to the growing season, letting Sangiovese Grosso grapes develop a stunning balance of ripeness and acidity.
On the nose, you can find bright aromas of sour cherry, red currants, and just a hint of violet. It’s fragrant but grounded, carrying notes of earth and an almost smoky, rustic quality. On the palate, the wine is both vibrant and structured, revealing layers of red fruit, cedar, and a savory touch of tomato leaf. The tannins are fine yet assertive, providing an excellent backbone without overpowering the purity of the fruit. It’s a wine that invites you to slow down, to take that next bite of wild boar ragù or grilled lamb and then take another sip. This is a wine that develops depth and texture as it opens up, and will age in bottle as well as most Brunellos.
