Giovanna Morganti's father was a renowned oenologist who recognized the potential of Tuscan varietals long before they became trendy among "flying consultants." Podere Le Boncie, located in the hamlet of San Felice just north of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the southern Chianti Classico zone, was his pride and joy.
Following in her father's footsteps, Giovanna pursued a degree in oenology and later worked on a project for San Felice wines in the mid-1980s. The project involved planting around 300 traditional Tuscan grape varieties collected from old vineyards. When her father gifted her with a small farm that had olive groves, called Le Boncie, Giovanna added a vineyard with her favorite varietals from the experimental project, including Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Foglia Tonda, Mammolo, and Prugnolo.

Giovanna’s flagship wine—formerly a “Chianti Classico” but proudly a “Toscana Rosso” since she wearied of the red tape and exited the appellation in 2012—comprises almost entirely Sangiovese, head-trained and densely planted, with splashes of interplanted indigenous varieties (Colorino, Mammolo, Foglia Tonda, and Ciliegiolo). Fermented in open-top oak casks and aged in a combination of large botti and 500-liter barrels (all well-used), “Le Trame” expresses powerful, punchy minerality and purity of fruit—robustly healthy, untampered fruit—that soars from the glass. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 300-350 meters; the average vine age is 15 years. The production is about 1000 cases; only 30% of the wines are sent to the United States. This wine can be described as wildly elegant. Dark, savory red fruits, gripping tannins, and crushed roses leap from the glass-a longtime favorite for us.
