Damilano 'Cannubi' Barolo, Italy 2019
Damilano 'Cannubi' Barolo, Italy 2019
Damilano dates back to 1890 (long before the creation of the Barolo DOCG) when Giuseppe Borgogno started producing wine from his own vineyards, making it one of the oldest continuous Barolo estates. In 1935, Borgogno’s son-in-law, Giacomo Damilano, took over the winery, improved the quality of both the winemaking and viticulture, and gave it the name it has to this day. In 1997, Giacomo passed the winery on to his grandchildren, Paolo, Mario and Guido, who continue working together to maintain the excellent quality of Damilano's wine.
Cannubi is an old and highly respected site in Barolo, and Damilano has a large portion of the central area of the hill. The calcium-rich soil here produces Nebbiolo that shows distinct minerality as well as a depth of fruit, and very fine tannins that offer a silkier mouthfeel than many other Barolos. The 2019 is particularly exquisite, with a full spectrum of the deeper flavors that Nebbiolo can produce, including plum, cherry, cocoa, licorice and tobacco. This will continue to age for decades, but will drink nicely now if decanted and allowed to breathe for two or more hours before enjoying.
