Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France 2016 1.5L
Located in the northwest part of the appellation, with vines chiefly in Cabrieres, Maucoil, and Mont Redon, Laurent Charvin makes one of the most elegant and seamless Châteauneuf-du-Papes. He farms all his 9ha of vineyards organically with great skill and care. He is a true believer in the elegant power of Grenache, with the varietal making up the majority of his plantings. Opting to produce a single cuvée, the winemaking here is staunchly traditional, all whole cluster fermentation and aging in concrete tanks for 21 months, bottled unfiltered.
The 2016 vintage was absolute perfection, regarded as the single best in Rhône within the last decade. While Charvin's wines from 2016 are already drinking well, this large format bottle is a prime candidate for continued aging over another one or two decades.
Grapes: Depending on the crop variation each vintage the blend is roughly 85% Grenache average vine age 58 years, 5% Mourvèdre 61 years, 5% Vaccarèse 62 years, 5% Syrah 21 years.
