The original recipe was developed at some point during the 16th century by an alchemist skilled enough to blend the 130 herbs, roots, and flowers that are still used today. The recipe found its way to the Carthusian Monks and in 1737 after more than a hundred years of research and technological developments, they were finally able to execute a practical formula with these ingredients. The resulting product, aptly dubbed the “Elixir of Long Life” and was hand peddled around the mountain villages of Grenoble until it gradually grew into the popularity it has today. It’s eye-catching emerald hue is naturally derived, but the ingredients remain an indecipherable secret. Today only two monks know two different portions of the ingredients list and not one person is in possession of the entire recipe.
