Philippe Jouan Clos-Saint-Denis, Vieilles Vignes, Grand Cru, Burgundy, France 2018
Philippe Jouan Clos-Saint-Denis, Vieilles Vignes, Grand Cru, Burgundy, France 2018
We will tell you a little secret: this is one of the best values in Burgundy, hands down. If you are looking for what reflects old-school Morey-Saint-Denis, look no further. An exceptional wine in its youth but would not disappoint with time in the cellar. If the now-retired and well-renowned Jacky Truchot had a spirit animal, Henri Jouan would be that guy. Friends and neighbors, the wines have a very similar poise and elegance. Henri’s son, Philippe, has been at the helm of the domaine since 2004. The technique in the cellar has hardly changed since the domaine started – 100% destemming and minimal influence of new wood across the range.
The single Grand Cru comes from two minuscule holdings of 100-year-old vines. They are hard to come by, especially vintages that suffer from frost and rain. 10-15 years in the cellar will put this wine in a perfect spot. The wines conduct a haunting aromatic complexity...don't sleep on these wines.
William Kelley, Wine Advocate:
Revisited from bottle, the 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has turned out well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, smoked meats, cherries, orange rind, warm spices and framboise. Full-bodied, rich and muscular, its ample core of fruit largely concealing ripe but youthfully chalky tannins, this is a powerful, lusty Clos Saint-Denis that possesses plenty of character, even if it isn't the most elegant Jouan has produced in recent years. Drink 2023 - 2043.
