Maurice Schoech Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Kaefferkopf, Alsace, France 2021
Maurice Schoech Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Kaefferkopf, Alsace, France 2021
Domaine Maurice Schoech was established as a family estate in 1971. They own Grand Cru vineyards, such as Kaefferkopf, that have been renowned since at least the 1830's. Jean-Léon and Sebastien uphold traditional standards to this day, using only estate-grown, hand-harvested fruit. Wines are produced from direct pressing of whole clusters, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and no chaptalization or other adjustments except minimal sulfur addition at bottling. The result is authentic Alsatian wine that is a true expression of the diverse soil types on the estate.
This is not a sweet Gewurztraminer, but is fermented to dryness and clocks in at 13.5% alcohol. Still, it has a classic nose of baking spices, apples, and lychee fruit, with low acidity. This makes it a great wine for soft cheeses or less sweet dessert courses.
Pairing: Apple crisp, Pork crown roast, Baked Brie en Croute
Grape: Gewürztraminer
Soil: Mostly limestone-marl, with significant granite, sandstone, and the volcanic Rangen de Thann
Viticulture: Certified organic by Ecocert since 2014, with some biodynamic practices. Practicing organic long before certification. The only treatment ever used is copper sulfate.
