Franz Gojer 'Karneid' Kerner, Alto Adige, Italy 2022

Franz Gojer inherited his winery in 1982. His winery, called Glögglhof, is located on a small hill just north of the town of Bolzano in the center of the Santa Maddalena appellation in Northern Alto-Adige. The vineyards are all located on steep hillsides with the vines trained in the traditional Pergola system.

The Karneid vineyard is 100% Kerner planted in 2008 at an altitude of 650 meters.  The steep slope and high elevation help to bring out the best in the elegant and aromatic Kerner.  After a 10 hour maceration, the fermentation takes place at a controlled low temperature in stainless steel tanks to preserve the delicate aromas.  A bone dry white with subtle notes of pear and white flowers, crisp acidity, and powerful minerality derived from the volcanic soils.

Grape: Kerner (An aromatic white grape varietal, bred in 1929 by August Herold by crossing Trollinger and Riesling)

Soil: Volcanic Porphyry

Viticulture: Sustainable

Pairings: Charcuterie, Bruschetta, Crudo, all things appetizer or seafood
