Keenan Merlot, Napa Valley, California 2021

Keenan Merlot, Napa Valley, California 2021
Keenan is a family-owned estate winery in the Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley, started in 1976 by Riley Keenan. They farm many traditional California varietals, as well as a few new ones, to produce truly classic wines of the region while embracing changes. Their vineyards were among the first to become certified Napa Green, which goes beyond organic certifications to include social responsibility, energy use, waste reduction, and phasing out the use of herbicides. The entire winery and estate is run predominantly on solar power
Keenan's Merlot vines are dry-farmed and situated on a cool site to ensure the preservation of acidity and finesse. The 2021 is a beautiful example of why Merlot has long been such an important varietal in Napa. Aged in 90% French oak and 10% American, with 1/3 being new. The oak is well integrated and lets the fruit shine through while adding some spice and concentration. Fully dry with ample structure and smooth chalk-like tannins that create a perfect backbone for classic bright plum and spice notes and some really yummy blue fruits.
