La Raia 'Pleo' Gavi, Italy 2024

La Raia operates as a complete biodynamic agricultural estate spanning 180 hectares, of which 48 hectares are planted to vines. The land is rich with biodiversity including pastureland and forested areas of chestnut, elder, and acacia, creating a habitat rich in produce and wildlife. The estate was purchased in 2003 by Giorgio Rossi Cairo who promptly transitioned the entire farm to biodynamic practice, achieving Demeter certification in 2007. Today La Raia is overseen by Giorgio’s son Piero whose strong commitment to biodynamics reaches well beyond viticulture. In addition to winegrowing, the estate hosts a Waldorf school and operates a home-delivery service providing locally grown organic produce to the surrounding community.

La Raia's 'Pleo' is an everyday Gavi white wine from Cortese vines rooted on the estate's softly rolling hills, where southwest-facing slopes rise to roughly 400 meters above sea level. The hand-harvested grapes are de-stemmed and gently pressed, then fermented using native yeasts selected from La Raia's own vineyards. The wine rests on its fine lees in stainless steel for three months, with periodic bâtonnage carried out every few weeks as required.

Bright and precise, it offers aromas of crisp green apple and fresh herbs layered with accents of lemon peel and a subtle saline edge. A perfect wine for light Italian fare and seafood or vegetarian pastas.
