Cappellano 'Pié Rupestris,' Barolo, Italy 2018

Cappellano was a legendary figure in Barolo and highly respected by artisanal growers throughout Italy. He was known as one of the region's great traditionalist winemakers and had a captivating personality. In 1983, he made the decision to allow only journalists who would review his wines without scores into his cellar. As a result, he earned a reputation as a winemaker who valued the quality of his wine over the opinions of critics.

This estate's principal Barolo is sourced from the Gabutti cru vineyard, with a south to southwest exposure. The Barolo "Rupestris," which accounts for two-thirds of their production, comes from a plot planted with grafted rootstock in the 1940s. The grapes from this parcel produce a Barolo with exceptional depth of color, remarkable richness, and length. This wine is a true and authentic representation of the terroir of this small but crucial cru. After an extended fermentation and considerable aging in the classic "botte" of the region, the wine is bottled without filtration. Typically, the wine is released four to four and a half years after the harvest, resulting in a generous and warm Barolo from an iconic estate.
