Ca' del Baio Barbaresco 'Vallagrande', Italy 2021
Ca' del Baio Barbaresco 'Vallagrande', Italy 2021
Ca' del Baio is a third-generation family estate owned by three sisters, working with 28 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Barbaresco. Producing high-quality wines in both red and white, they make a line of classic terroir-focused Nebbiolo, but also a range of Chardonnay and Moscato from 5 hectares of vineyard in Alta Langa.
Their Barbaresco 'Vallagrande' is from a single vineyard right next to the winery, planted to 35-40 year-old Nebbiolo vines. The soil here is much higher in white limestone than the average sites in the region, lending a pristine focus to this particular Barbaresco bottling. The wine is a beautiful ruby hue; clear and tight, with a nose of graphite and fresh black cherry. This is a decidedly mineral Barbaresco with fine-grained tannins - lively and bright now but ready to age gracefully for at least another decade. A real triumph of this lesser-known estate, and a truly excellent value at this price.
